Siemens Mobility Wins Contract for Hydrogen Trains in Romania
The Romanian Railway Reform Authority has awarded Siemens Mobility a contract for 12 hydrogen-powered trains, valued at over 1.6 billion lei, following the loss of initial EU funding. This development emphasizes the need for alternative financing sources for sustainable mobility projects amid financial challenges.

On April 15, 2026, the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) awarded Siemens Mobility a contract worth 1,617,696,763.20 lei for the delivery of 12 hydrogen fuel cell electric trains, model Mireo Plus Hydrogen, with a maintenance period of 30 years. This contract comes after funding through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan was lost, highlighting the urgency for ARF to secure new financing avenues.
The trains will serve un-electrified regional routes, aligning with EU regulations for public transport services. The hydrogen train technology is still emerging in Europe, with only a few countries, including Italy and Germany, actively operating pilot projects. The need for alternative funding solutions, alongside this contract, reflects the ongoing adaptation to decarbonization goals in regional rail transport.
