Sindh Protests Delays in Tarbela Hydropower Infrastructure Projects
Sindh has raised concerns over delays in Tarbela-4 and 5 hydropower projects, risking reduced water supply for Kharif 2026. The incomplete infrastructure threatens irrigation for Sindh and Balochistan, vital for the upcoming agricultural season.

Sindh's Minister for Irrigation has urged the federal government to address delays in the Tarbela Dam's infrastructure work, warning of severe operational constraints for the Kharif 2026 season. The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) had issued a No Objection Certificate to WAPDA valid until June 2025, but the projects remain unfinished, which has previously restricted outflows to 150,000 cusecs.
Recent communications indicate further delays in testing and repairs, potentially reducing outflows by an additional 45,000 cusecs. The cumulative effect could lead to a 75,000 cusec shortfall during critical growing periods. This could severely impact Sindh's agricultural output, heightening interprovincial tensions over water management.
