Singapore Issues Tender for Hydrogen-Ready Power Plants Targeting 2031-2032 Operations
Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) has initiated a tender for three hydrogen-ready gas power plants to meet rising electricity demand projected to peak at 11.4GW by 2031. This initiative supports the country's energy resilience strategy while transitioning towards low-carbon alternatives.

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore has opened a request for proposals for the construction of three hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants. The units are expected to begin phased operation between 2031 and 2032, each with a minimum capacity of 600 megawatts (MW).
This development is critical as Singapore anticipates peak electricity demand to reach 9.6 to 11.4 gigawatts by 2031, driven by industrial expansion and digital infrastructure growth. The tender reflects Singapore's ongoing reliance on natural gas, which currently accounts for over 95% of electricity generation, while preparing for future hydrogen use.
Given the geopolitical uncertainties affecting energy supply, the initiative aims to balance energy security and decarbonization efforts. The tender is anticipated to attract bids from both local and regional energy firms experienced in gas-fired power generation.
