During the Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference 2025, Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling articulated Singapore's ongoing commitment to solidifying its stature as a global energy hub, even as the world shifts towards a low-carbon future. In the face of unprecedented volatility characterized by geopolitical tensions and an oversupply of energy, she reported a notable increase in energy trade—from US$1.44 trillion in 2023 to US$1.67 trillion in 2024. This growth coincides with a 5% rise in the number of trading professionals in the region, reflecting Singapore's resilience and adaptability.

Low attributed much of this progress to innovation and the integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, which traders are now employing for more effective forecasting and risk management. She cited BHP Group's establishment of a regional AI hub in Singapore and the collaborative development of machine learning tools by Four Elements Capital, supported by AI Singapore, as exemplary initiatives in this technological evolution.

On the transition to a low-carbon economy, Low identified key growth areas for Singapore, including sustainable products, biofuels, alternative maritime fuels, and carbon trading. She noted the establishment of Arkema's new facility on Jurong Island, billed as the world's largest for bio-circular materials, alongside Neste's sustainable aviation fuel plant, which holds the same title in its category.

Furthermore, with 26 bids submitted for ammonia bunkering projects, Singapore is positioning itself as a frontrunner in maritime fuels. The expansion of carbon services is also noteworthy, with over 150 firms, including industry giants like Shell, BP, ExxonMobil, and Trafigura, now operating locally, underscoring Singapore's pivotal role in the evolving energy landscape.
