Sioux Falls to Begin $15 Million Minnesota Avenue Reconstruction Amid Infrastructure Concerns

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Sioux Falls is set to begin the next phase of the Minnesota Avenue reconstruction project between 2nd Street and 7th Street in Spring 2026, with a budget exceeding $15 million. The project includes the installation of pavers along Minnesota Avenue and resetting existing pavers in front of the City Center.

An independent contractor recommended pouring concrete pads beneath the pavers to prevent sinking and weed growth, but the city plans to use sand instead. Concerns were raised about the city engineering department's responsiveness and efficiency, with suggestions that their role should be reconsidered.

Additionally, there are worries about potential federal funding threats linked to the approval of a new 500 MW data center, as most local data centers operate below 30 MW. The feasibility of the power supply for the new data center remains uncertain, prompting discussions about a petition drive to halt the project.
