Site Preparations for Small Modular Reactors at Palisades Begin
Holtec International is initiating site preparations for two small modular reactors (SMRs) at the Palisades site, aiming for operational status in the 2030s. The project, supported by a $400 million DOE grant, is expected to enhance energy independence and stability in Southwest Michigan.

Holtec International has commenced early site preparation for two small modular reactors (SMRs) at the Palisades nuclear site, anticipated to generate an additional 680 megawatts of electric output. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted part 1 of the construction permit application, signaling progress towards the targeted operation of the Pioneer 1 and 2 units in the 2030s.
The project is supported by a $400 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and involves partnerships with Hyundai Engineering and Construction and Mitsubishi. This initiative aims to bolster the region's energy grid amid rising demand from data centers and AI technologies, positioning Southwest Michigan as a key player in the nuclear energy sector.
