SKA Observatory Partners with AWS for Cloud-based HPC Cluster Development
The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is implementing a cloud-based high-performance computing cluster using Amazon Web Services (AWS). The Server Labs will establish the cluster to support SKAO during its development phase.
The Square Kilometer Array will feature 197 antennas in South Africa and 131,072 in Australia, generating around 700 petabytes of data yearly. The AWS-based cluster will provide the necessary flexible computing environment to adapt to varying hardware configurations.
This partnership extends a long-standing collaboration, initially established in 2015 with the AstroCompute in the Cloud grant program. In addition, the Australian government allocated $64.4 million for a supercomputer in Perth and a second supercomputer in Cape Town, collectively achieving at least 250 petaflops of compute capacity.
