Skanska and Governors Island Trust Complete Topping Out of New Electrical Substation
Skanska and the Trust for Governors Island have achieved a key milestone with the topping out of a new electrical substation in New York City. This substation is essential for supporting the island's transformation into a center for climate innovation and sustainable development.

The topping out of a new 27kV electrical substation on Governors Island signifies the completion of its main structural framework. This facility is part of a broader initiative to upgrade infrastructure, enabling the island to support future development and increased activity.
The substation will provide reliable electricity for new buildings and educational programs, enhancing energy capacity as Governors Island evolves into a year-round destination. In addition, approximately 1.5 miles of underground electrical duct banks and new cable systems are being installed, coordinated with Con Edison for safety and reliability.
Sustainable features include a green roof and solar panels aimed at reducing energy dependence. The project will also improve public amenities, contributing to a more accessible and engaging visitor experience.
