SMECO Addresses Energy Concerns Amid Rising Market Prices and Data Center Impact
SMECO outlines its energy procurement process amid rising wholesale electricity prices and community concerns over data centers. The cooperative emphasizes that data centers must bear the costs associated with their energy needs and any potential impacts on existing customers.

SMECO officials presented details on electricity procurement and distribution at an April 28 meeting, highlighting their managed portfolio approach to power purchasing. Recent data shows that wholesale capacity prices have surged, with the PJM capacity auction clearing at a record $269.92 per megawatt-day, influenced by demand growth and the shutdown of fossil fuel generation.
Notably, data centers are not solely responsible for market price increases; other factors include energy efficiency, labor costs, and population growth. Maryland law mandates that data centers must cover full costs for electric system buildout and contribute to ongoing operations. This approach aims to mitigate adverse impacts on SMECO's customer base.
