Smithfield Foods to Close Springfield Sausage Plant, Cutting 190 Jobs

AMMONIA

Smithfield Foods plans to shut down its Springfield dry sausage facility by August, eliminating 190 jobs and ceasing its production operations in Massachusetts. The company will transfer the plant's work to other packaged-meats facilities and is offering transition support to affected employees.

As of 2024, Smithfield operates 31 production plants in the U.S. and Mexico, with the nearest facility in New Jersey. This closure occurs shortly after a nearly $140,000 settlement with the EPA over Clean Air Act violations involving anhydrous ammonia management at the Springfield plant, which has since been resolved. Smithfield maintains that the plant closure is unrelated to the EPA settlement.
