SMS group has acquired selected Metso business units in Germany, India, China, and Australia, focusing on technologies for sintering and pelletizing, alongside CFB calcination. This acquisition enhances SMS group's upstream capabilities in iron ore preparation and strengthens its role in direct reduction and conventional ironmaking processes.

SMS group is also developing a hydrogen-based process utilizing Metso's Circored fluidized-bed direct reduction technology combined with its Open Bath Furnace (OBF) technology. This new route aims to process iron ore fines with lower Fe contents, reducing preprocessing needs and increasing flexibility in feedstock and energy concepts.
