Snam Invests €200M in Italian H2 Backbone for SoutH2 Corridor Hydrogen Project
Snam plans to invest €200m in the Italian H2 Backbone, a 1,920km hydrogen pipeline network, as part of its 2026-2030 Strategic Plan. The project aims to repurpose 70% of existing gas pipelines, reducing costs and facilitating the transport of green hydrogen from North Africa to Europe. Initial hydrogen imports will commence at Mazara del Vallo in Sicily, with full commissioning expected by 2030.

Snam is investing €200m ($232m) in the Italian H2 Backbone, a 1,920km hydrogen pipeline network, within its 2026-2030 Strategic Plan. This initiative is integral to the SoutH2 Corridor, which links North African green hydrogen to Germany, Austria, and Italy.
The project will repurpose 70% of existing gas pipelines, enhancing cost efficiency. Development phases include planning and co-funding until 2025, supported by a €24m European Commission grant. Full commissioning is targeted for 2030, with initial hydrogen imports starting at Mazara del Vallo in Sicily.
