Social Circle City Council Proposes New Regulations for Data Centers

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

The Social Circle City Council proposed amendments to its development code to regulate data centers, prompted by increased interest in the area. A moratorium on data center applications, initially established in September, was extended for 90 days.

Proposed regulations include minimum site size of 50 acres, a 1,000-foot distance from residences, and eight-foot perimeter fencing. Additional requirements cover lighting, noise limitations, emergency plans, and proof of utility services before permits are issued.

Changes to special-use permits were also reviewed, mandating permits for data centers in heavy industrial areas and setting expiration terms. A separate proposal for a 494,000-square-foot warehouse rezoning was discussed, with planning staff recommending approval while denying the special-use permit.
