Sodium-Ion Battery Technology Advances Towards Commercialization
Sodium-ion battery technology is emerging for large-scale energy storage, potentially reshaping the energy market. With lower material costs and high availability of sodium, these systems may reduce reliance on lithium and enhance safety in energy storage applications.

Sodium-ion battery systems are entering mass commercialization, with several U.S. startups, including Peak Energy, initiating production. Peak Energy plans to establish a factory in Sacramento, targeting a production capacity of 4 GWh by 2027, at an investment of $71 million.
General Motors is also collaborating with Peak Energy to develop sodium-ion cells, emphasizing the technology's potential for large-scale energy storage. Analysts predict that sodium-ion batteries could capture up to 20% of the market by 2030, with estimates of investment opportunities reaching $800 billion.
However, Chinese firms, notably CATL, lead in scaling this technology, with significant production plans and contracts in place. This competitive landscape may challenge U.S. and European endeavors to establish a diversified supply chain for battery materials.
