Solar Microgrid Transforms Oloibiri's Economy and Community Services
A solar microgrid in Oloibiri, Bayelsa State, supports 160 connections, boosting local businesses and healthcare. Initiatives like this address Nigeria's broader electricity deficit and provide a model for future community energy projects.

In 2020, a solar microgrid by Renewvia Energy Corporation began servicing 160 households and businesses in Oloibiri, Nigeria, enhancing local economic activities. Funded in part by Shell's AllOn and Nigeria's federal Nigerian Electrification Project, the initiative is part of a $550 million investment in off-grid renewable infrastructure since 2018.
The community has shifted from reliance on costly diesel generators to a prepaid solar system, drastically reducing operating costs for local businesses. Training workshops have educated residents on energy management, promoting a sustainable model for economic growth.
The Oloibiri Health for Life Medical Centre now benefits from reliable energy for critical healthcare services. This model could serve as a template for similar rural electrification efforts across Nigeria.
