Solar Power Surges in Asia Amid Energy Crisis
Solar energy has emerged as Asia's third-largest electricity source, generating approximately 1,727 TWh by April 2026. The region accounted for 74.2% of global renewable energy capacity increase in 2025, driven by investment and growing domestic energy security needs amidst geopolitical tensions.

By April 2026, solar power generation in Asia reached around 1,727 TWh, placing it third among electricity sources on the continent. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reported that Asia contributed 74.2% to global renewable capacity growth in 2025.
Countries like the Philippines have significantly increased imports of Chinese solar panels, with exports soaring by 150% year-on-year. Meanwhile, Pakistan avoided $6.3 billion in import costs due to its solar boom.
The energy crisis exacerbated by geopolitical issues has accelerated the transition to renewables across the region, potentially reshaping energy investment strategies. Increased costs may hinder transformation in some areas, particularly island nations.
