Solent Mitigation Partnership Launches Nutrient Mitigation Credits to Support Housing Development
New nutrient mitigation credits have been launched by the Solent Mitigation Partnership to facilitate housing development while ensuring environmental protection. The initiative includes nitrogen and phosphorus credits from a wastewater treatment plant upgrade in the Itchen River catchment area, aiming to achieve nutrient neutrality for developers. Initially, 45.10 nitrogen credits and 4.73 phosphorus credits are available within the Winchester planning authority, addressing prior development barriers due to nutrient constraints.

The Solent Mitigation Partnership has introduced nutrient mitigation credits to promote housing development and protect water quality. These credits stem from an upgrade to a wastewater treatment plant in the Itchen River catchment area, providing developers with nitrogen and phosphorus credits to meet nutrient neutrality requirements.
Initially, 45.10 nitrogen credits and 4.73 phosphorus credits are available for developments in the Winchester planning authority area and those draining to the Itchen River downstream of Itchen Stoke, respectively. This initiative aims to resolve previous development obstacles linked to nutrient neutrality and is part of SMP's ongoing efforts to deliver new mitigation options across the region.
