South Africa Launches 2.5 kW Hydrogen Fuel Cell Prototype at UWC
The Department of Science and Technology has unveiled a 2.5 kW hydrogen fuel cell generator at the University of the Western Cape. This initiative highlights South Africa's advancements in hydrogen technology and its potential to enhance energy access while reducing carbon emissions.

The Department of Science and Technology has introduced a 2.5 kW hydrogen fuel cell power generator prototype at the University of the Western Cape. Developed by HySA Systems in collaboration with Hot Platinum (Pty Ltd), the unit has been tested at the Cape Flats Nature Reserve, providing all electrical power from hydrogen cylinders instead of the national grid.
The project emphasizes the role of innovation in energy solutions and the potential for South Africa to become a hub for fuel cell component production. As hydrogen fuel cell technologies gain traction, they could significantly impact the platinum market and offer environmental benefits through reduced emissions.
