South Africa Launches E-Waste Recycling Pilot in Northern Cape
The South African government initiates an E-Waste Recycling Pilot Project in Northern Cape to enhance circular economy practices and boost job creation. This effort aims to divert over 360,000 tonnes of annual e-waste from landfills, addressing both environmental risks and economic opportunities.

The E-Waste Recycling Pilot Project, launched by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment in Mothibistad, Northern Cape, aims to improve electronic waste management and support local economic growth. This initiative aligns with South Africa's National Waste Management Strategy, focusing on reducing landfill waste and increasing recycling rates through community engagement and strategic partnerships.
The project involves the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality and Producer Responsibility Organisations, seeking to establish efficient collection systems and enhance public awareness of responsible recycling. The pilot will also foster local enterprises in the recycling sector, contributing to job creation and skills development. Effective implementation can provide scalable models for other regions, promoting long-term sustainability in the circular economy.
