South African National Space Agency Supports Artemis II and Advances Space Technology
The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) is actively supporting NASA's Artemis II mission while advancing its own space technology initiatives. This involvement includes spacecraft tracking and monitoring space weather, enhancing the country's capabilities in satellite operations and extreme weather prediction.

SANSA has been tracking NASA's Orion spacecraft for Artemis II since April 1, 2026, from its Hartebeesthoek ground station in Gauteng. The agency's role includes monitoring adverse space weather events that could impact technological systems, thus ensuring the reliability of spacecraft and ground applications.
Additionally, SANSA is developing engineering technology to support South Africa's space industry, including facilities for assembling and testing various payloads. Notably, its microsatellite SumbandilaSat, launched in 2009, contributed significantly to disaster management and resource monitoring before its de-orbit in December 2021. SANSA's initiatives may lead to a stronger domestic space sector but face challenges in competing with established space programs.
