South Africa's Data Centres: Energy Independence and AI Growth Drive Investment
South Africa's data centres are investing heavily in energy solutions, including building power stations and solar farms, to address load shedding issues. Companies like AWS, Teraco, and Africa Data Centres are leading initiatives to secure renewable energy and backup power to support AI operations. The regulatory environment is challenging, with operators sometimes circumventing environmental authorizations for expansions. The industry is viewed as a vital infrastructure asset, attracting significant investment from local capital and pension funds.

South African data centres are increasingly investing in energy solutions to combat load shedding, with firms like AWS, Teraco, and Africa Data Centres developing solar farms and power stations. AWS initiated this trend in 2021 with a 10MW solar plant, while Teraco built a 120MW facility.
Vantage Data Centers and ADC are also securing substantial power capacities. However, reliance on fossil fuels for backup power complicates sustainability efforts. Regulatory challenges arise as operators expand without prior environmental authorizations. The sector is seen as a key infrastructure investment, capturing significant interest from local pension funds and investors.
