South Africa's mining production increased by 4.6% year on year in January 2026, the highest since October 2025, with platinum group metals (PGM) output rising by 10.8%. Price increases for platinum and improved operational conditions contributed to this growth. Valterra Platinum reported a 10.8% quarterly output increase, while Impala Platinum and Northam Platinum also saw production gains. Additionally, chromium and manganese production rose significantly, supporting overall mining performance.

Major producers Valterra Platinum, Impala Platinum, and Northam Platinum reported increased outputs. Valterra achieved a 10.8% quarterly rise, while Impala's output was up 1% and Northam's surged by 3.7%. Additionally, chromium production soared by 37.3% and manganese by 12.5%, contributing to the positive mining performance.
