South Dakota Gov. Rhoden Approves Transfer of Spearfish Canyon Hydro Plant to Nonprofit
South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden signed bills to transfer the Homestake Mine Hydro Electric Plant No. 2 to the Spearfish Canyon Foundation for potential use as an interpretive center. The legislation, effective July 1, aims to enhance public understanding of local mining and hydropower history. Additionally, $8 million will be allocated for renovations at the Blue Dog State Fish Hatchery, funded by federal and state resources.

Governor Larry Rhoden of South Dakota approved a bill transferring the 1917 Homestake Mine Hydro Electric Plant No. 2 to the Spearfish Canyon Foundation for potential conversion into an interpretive center. This transfer, effective July 1, aims to educate visitors about the area's mining and hydropower history.
Additionally, $8 million is allocated for the Blue Dog State Fish Hatchery's construction and renovation, with $3.5 million from federal funds and $4.5 million from state fishing license revenue and private donations. This hatchery is the state's leading walleye producer, raising approximately 60 million fish annually for stocking in local waters.
