South Korea to Lift Military Facility Protection Zones and Tongyang to Build AI Data Centers
South Korea's Ministry of National Defense announced plans to lift military facility protection zones totaling 13.07 million square meters in border areas, including Yeoncheon and Cheorwon. The ministry finalized its fourth basic plan for 2025-2029, allowing construction below designated heights without prior military consultation.
Key areas include 370,000 square meters in Cheorwon and 7,500 square meters in Yeoncheon. Tongyang Inc., part of Eugene Group, plans to construct two AI data centers in Bucheon and Namdong District, with construction starting in the first half of 2025 and completion by 2028.
The Bucheon center will cover 3,593 square meters, featuring a capacity of 9.8 megawatts, while the Namdong center will be 2,016 square meters with nine above-ground floors. Both centers will operate as a unified infrastructure for ultra-low-latency services.
