Southern Africa and Eastern Africa Power Pools to Connect, Enhancing Regional Electricity Capacity

HYDRO POWER

The Southern Africa Power Pool will connect with the Eastern Africa Power Pool later this year, facilitating access to East Africa's hydroelectric generation. This connection aims to alleviate electricity supply issues faced by industries in Southern Africa, particularly mining.

South Africa's electricity grid needs about 14,000 kilometers of new transmission lines costing R450 billion, with the government seeking private sector investment for expansion. The Independent Transmission Programme plans to develop 1,164 kilometers of transmission lines, with a preferred bidder expected by year-end. The mining sector may play a significant role in accelerating infrastructure development.
