Southern Water Proposes Major Upgrade to Portswood Sewage Works Amid Community Concerns
Southern Water plans a multi-million-pound upgrade of Portswood wastewater treatment works to enhance capacity and reduce pollution. The project, lasting approximately 2.5 years, may disrupt local residents due to increased construction traffic.

Southern Water is initiating a significant upgrade to the Portswood wastewater treatment facility, with an investment exceeding £160 million aimed at reducing nitrogen pollution in the River Itchen and improving overall site resilience. The upgrade includes the addition of two new treatment lanes, refurbishment of four existing lanes, and the installation of new pumping stations and infrastructure.
Local concerns have been voiced regarding potential disruptions from heavy goods vehicles, particularly on Kent Road, which is designated as the main construction route. The project is expected to last around 2.5 years, raising risks of diesel spills affecting the sensitive chalk streams. Alternative transport methods, such as using the river for material transport, have been suggested to mitigate these impacts.
