Sovereign Metals Allocates K45 Billion to Malawi from K1 Trillion Mining Revenue
Sovereign Metals plans to generate K1 trillion from its mining project in Malawi, with K45 billion earmarked for the government. The low royalty rate has sparked public concern and calls for renegotiation of mining agreements.

Sovereign Metals is set to generate K1 trillion from its rutile and graphite mining project in Kasiya, Malawi, projected to produce 122,000 tonnes of rutile and 80,000 tonnes of graphite annually over 25 years. The Malawi government will receive K45 billion in royalties, reflecting the statutory royalty rate of 5%.
Concerns have been raised among the public regarding the adequacy of this amount, prompting discussions about renegotiation of terms. Sovereign's managing director, Dr. Julian Stephens, has indicated plans for expansion, including the addition of the Nsaru rutile deposit. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges in balancing resource extraction benefits for local governments and communities.
