Space Forge Launches Microwave-Sized Factory to Produce Semiconductor Material in Space

SPACE ECONOMY

Space Forge has successfully launched a microwave-sized factory into orbit, demonstrating the capability to remotely heat its furnace to around 1000 degrees Celsius. The company aims to manufacture semiconductor materials in microgravity, which allows for a near-perfect atomic arrangement, enhancing purity and performance.

CEO Josh Western stated that their process could produce semiconductors up to 4000 times cleaner than those made on Earth, suitable for applications in 5G towers, electric vehicle chargers, and advanced aircraft. The mini-factory was deployed by SpaceX and is currently being tested from Cardiff.

Plans are underway to build a larger factory capable of producing material for 10,000 chips and to test technology for material transport back to Earth. A heat shield named Pridwen will be used in the next mission to protect the spacecraft during re-entry. Other companies are also exploring space manufacturing for various products.
