Space Forge Launches Microwave-Sized Factory to Produce Semiconductors in Orbit

SPACE ECONOMY

Space Forge, a Cardiff-based company, has successfully launched a microwave-sized factory into low Earth orbit, demonstrating its furnace can reach temperatures around 1,000°C. The company aims to manufacture semiconductor-grade materials in space, which can be utilized on Earth in various electronics, including 5G towers and electric vehicle chargers.

The microgravity environment allows for highly ordered atomic structures, potentially producing semiconductors up to 4,000 times purer than current Earth-based methods. The initial unit was launched aboard a SpaceX rocket, and the team is now working on a larger factory capable of producing material for approximately 10,000 chips.

A future mission will test a heat shield named Pridwen for safe re-entry of materials to Earth. Interest in space-based manufacturing is growing, with other firms exploring similar production processes.
