Spanish-German Partnership to Utilize AI for Advancing AEM Electrolysis Efficiency

HYDROGENELECTROLYZER

A strategic partnership between Spanish electrocatalyst producer Matteco and Berlin-based Dunia Innovations aims to enhance AEM electrolysis efficiency using an AI-guided experimentation platform. Dunia's technology will optimize electrolyser catalyst layers to improve reliability and scalability, targeting high green hydrogen production costs.

The collaboration builds on Matteco's production of PGM-free catalysts, potentially leading to significant cost reductions through minor enhancements. In 2024, Matteco raised €15 million ($18 million) to expand its electrocatalyst production in Valencia and is supplying catalysts to Ariema Enerxía under a €1.4 million government-funded project. AEM electrolysis is currently viewed as complex and less proven than PEM, but advancements may enable long-term cost reductions through the use of non-PGM catalysts.
