Spartanburg County Council Faces Public Opposition to $3 Billion Data Center Proposal

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Residents of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, are raising concerns over a proposed $3 billion data center, Project Spero, as the county council prepares to vote on a tax incentive package. Citizens question the approval process, potential taxpayer burdens, and the limited job creation associated with such facilities.

On December 8, 2025, the council was expected to reveal the company behind the project, but the vote was requested to be delayed. Public comments highlighted worries about strained infrastructure, environmental impacts, and the lack of local job guarantees.

Concerns were also raised about significant utility rate increases linked to data centers. A petition against data centers in the Upstate has gathered nearly 1,000 signatures, calling for a moratorium until proper regulations are established.
