SpeQtral has commenced its quantum experimentation phase by taking operational control of the SpeQtre satellite, following its launch last November. The satellite has been successfully tracked and detected from multiple optical ground stations, including those in Singapore and Chilbolton, UK.
Establishing optical links for quantum key distribution (QKD) is essential, as these require precise alignment of lasers compared to conventional radio-frequency communication. The ongoing calibration process aims to optimize the satellite's onboard entangled photon-pair source for effective operations.
With the threat of quantum computing to current encryption standards projected to materialize by 2030, this initiative is critical for developing secure communication systems. The work will provide necessary data for future space-to-ground QKD applications, enhancing cybersecurity frameworks.
