SSAB Initiates Closed Loop Steel Recycling Project in the U.S.
SSAB Americas, Greenbrier, and Alter Trading are launching a circular economy initiative for near-zero emissions steel production. This project aims to enhance steel sustainability by integrating recycled materials back into the supply chain.

SSAB Americas, in collaboration with The Greenbrier Companies and Alter Trading, is establishing a closed-loop steel recycling initiative in the U.S. The project will commence at SSAB's Iowa facility, where SSAB Zero™ steel, made from recycled metals and fossil-free energy, is produced.
Greenbrier is utilizing SSAB Zero™ steel for the manufacture of 50 gondola railcars, which will transport recycled metals back to SSAB for new steel production. This partnership emphasizes sustainability through a documented and traceable value chain, without offsets. The initiative could significantly impact the steel industry's carbon footprint and promote broader adoption of circular economy practices.
