St. Joseph County Council Faces Transparency Issues Over Data Center Proposal
Concerns arise regarding transparency and data accuracy in the St. Joseph County Council's December decision to reject a data center rezoning request. Local leaders demand better communication and community engagement in future proposals.

The St. Joseph County Council voted 7-2 in December to deny a rezoning request for a proposed data center in New Carlisle. Community leaders, including St.
Joseph County Surveyor Derek Dieter and South Bend Council member Oliver Davis, have raised issues about the transparency and accuracy of information presented during the meeting. A petition supporting the project included 1,093 signatures, but Dieter found discrepancies in the numbers, noting that 325 signatures were miscounted and many were from outside the county.
There is concern that the petitioners did not adequately engage local residents. Developers could submit a new proposal by June, highlighting the need for clearer communication in future discussions.
