Stack Overflow has exited its data center in New Jersey as part of a cloud migration strategy initiated in August 2025. The company previously operated from this physical facility for 16 years, managing server operations directly.

The transition to cloud services, specifically to Google Cloud under 'Project Ascension,' involved migrating all workloads after earlier migrations of 'Stack Overflow for Teams' faced significant challenges. The New Jersey site closure followed the decommissioning of a Colorado site in June.

Stack emphasized that the migration, while costly, is aimed at gaining flexibility rather than reducing expenses. The New Jersey data center housed approximately 50 servers, all of which were dismantled on July 2nd. Stack Overflow was founded in 2008 and sold for $1.8 billion to Prosus in 2021.
