Stargate Hydrogen Partners with Saudi Arabia to Develop Electrolyser Systems
Stargate Hydrogen, an Estonian manufacturer of alkaline electrolysers, is poised to expand its operations into Saudi Arabia following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Research Development and Innovation Authority (RDI). This strategic partnership marks a significant step in Stargate's ambition to establish a regional headquarters in Riyadh, a move that underscores the kingdom's commitment to becoming a hub for clean energy technologies.
To align with local manufacturing standards and supply chains, Stargate will adapt its electrolyser designs while leveraging collaborations with esteemed Saudi academic institutions, such as King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), to foster local intellectual property development. This initiative is part of a broader program initiated by RDI and the Ministry of Investment, aimed at attracting global tech startups to establish manufacturing bases in the Middle East.
Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate, emphasized the unique and competitive landscape Saudi Arabia offers for scaling transformative technologies. Through this collaboration, Stargate aims not only to generate intellectual property but also to cultivate local talent, contributing to the kingdom's vision of leadership in the clean energy sector.
Stargate Hydrogen has been ramping up its electrolyser production capacity in recent months, having recently opened a new factory in Estonia, which boasts a full order book for 2025. This facility is equipped to deliver 140 megawatts of systems annually, with the potential for expansion to over 1 gigawatt should additional investments be secured. As Stargate forges ahead with its plans, the partnership with Saudi Arabia positions it to play a pivotal role in the region's energy transformation.
