Statkraft Completes Indigenous Consultation for Los Lagos Hydroelectric Project in Chile
The Chilean National Monuments Council concluded a four-year indigenous consultation for Statkraft's Los Lagos hydroelectric project, which is 99% complete. The project has faced delays due to archaeological findings and consultations with the Mapuche-Huilliche communities.
A November 2021 Supreme Court order mandated protective measures for archaeological sites, leading to a two-year delay and an estimated $50 million increase in costs. Allegations of police intimidation towards indigenous defenders have surfaced, prompting concerns over human rights. Statkraft aims to provide 52 MW of clean energy, essential for Chile's sustainability goals, while ongoing monitoring and dialogue are necessary to mitigate risks.
