Stena Futura Hybrid Ferry Enhances Freight Capacity on Belfast-Heysham Route
The Stena Futura, a state-of-the-art hybrid ferry, is poised to commence operations on the Belfast-Heysham freight route on September 22, heralding a new chapter in sustainable shipping. With a length of 147 meters, this vessel will offer 12 sailings per week, addressing the growing demand for freight services between Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Once both the Futura and its sister ship, Stena Connecta, which is currently under construction and scheduled for early 2026, are operational, freight capacity on this vital route will increase by 40%.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the Stena Futura utilizes innovative technologies, including methanol and battery power, and is equipped to harness shore power when available. This commitment to environmentally friendly practices aligns with Stena Line's broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030.
Paul Grant, Route Director at Stena Line, emphasized that the introduction of the Futura signifies a substantial investment of over £100 million in the Irish Sea network, directly responding to customer demand for enhanced freight capacity. The integration of advanced propulsion systems, such as rotor sails and shore power capabilities, marks a significant advancement in the company's sustainability journey.
Joe O'Neill, Chief Executive of Belfast Harbour, expressed enthusiasm over the arrival of the Futura, highlighting its potential to boost freight volumes on the Belfast-Heysham route. Similarly, Phil Hall, Port Director at Peel Ports Group, noted that this development opens a new era of greener shipping across the Irish Sea, supported by ongoing investments to upgrade port facilities.
With a fleet operating up to 238 weekly sailings, Stena Line remains the largest ferry operator in the region, offering various passenger and freight services. The arrival of the Stena Futura not only enhances the operational capacity of the Belfast-Heysham route but also reinforces the company's role as a leader in sustainable maritime transport.
