Stokes County Considers Zoning Amendment for Project Delta Data Center near Greensboro, NC

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Stokes County, North Carolina, is set to discuss an amendment to its zoning ordinance to permit data centers in heavy manufacturing zones. This coincides with a rezoning request for Project Delta, a proposed data center on 1,800 acres near US 311 and Tuttle Road, close to Duke Energy's Belews Creek plant.

The campus is expected to have a capacity of several hundred megawatts and will feature a new substation and a closed-loop cooling system. Local developer David Couch of Blue Ridge Companies is collaborating with Engineered Land Solutions on the project.

The Stokes County planning board voted against the proposal on December 4, following a prior rejection of a Duke Energy solar farm on the same site. A petition against Project Delta, organized by Clean Water for North Carolina, has collected over 2,600 signatures, labeling the project as a threat to local heritage.
