Storegga Halts Hydrogen Plant Plans Near River Spey Amid Restructuring

HYDROGEN

Storegga has officially halted plans for a hydrogen plant near Ballindalloch in Moray, Scotland, following community opposition and a unanimous decision by Moray Council to reject the project in October 2024. The development faced nearly 400 objections concerning pollution, impacts on river levels and wildlife, and increased traffic.

Storegga missed the appeal deadline for the council's decision and is undergoing portfolio management for its hydrogen projects. The proposed plant would have extracted 500 cubic meters of water daily from the River Spey, which is already experiencing significant water scarcity.

The community, represented by Friends of Speyside, expressed relief at the halting of the project, citing concerns over the endangered Atlantic salmon and freshwater mussel populations. Storegga indicated that any future development would be led by new ownership.
