Stratford's Proposed Hydro Electricity Generator Could Supply Power to Royal Shakespeare Company

HYDRO POWER

A proposed hydro power generator on the River Avon in Stratford could produce approximately 350 megawatts annually. The feasibility study for this Stratford District Council project, part of the Liberal Democrats' green spending plans, is expected soon after delays.

An allocation of £1.5 million has been made for the study, commissioned to Renewable First Limited. The Royal Shakespeare Company has expressed interest in purchasing the generated green energy. The generator, to be installed near Lucy's Mill, is projected to generate around one megawatt daily.

The payback period for the project is estimated at 19.5 years, yielding a 2.7% return. Risks include site suitability due to climatic conditions and potential alternative projects, such as solar canopies on council car parks. More details will follow after the feasibility study is published on January 9, ahead of a cabinet meeting on January 19.
