Study Highlights Potential of Co-Firing Wastewater Sludge in China's Power Sector
A study indicates that co-firing wastewater sludge with coal in China's thermal power plants could significantly reduce emissions and sludge volumes while generating additional revenue. The findings underscore the importance of optimizing local infrastructure to facilitate a circular economy in waste management and energy production.

Research reveals that co-firing wastewater sludge with coal in thermal power plants in China could reduce sludge volumes by up to 79%, mitigating 15.25 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The study utilized a database of 5,218 wastewater treatment plants and 1,990 thermal power plants, proposing an allocation framework that optimizes sludge use on a plant-by-plant basis.
The model accommodates fluctuations in sludge generation and power plant capacity, offering a tailored approach to resource management. Economic benefits include potential median profits of 369.41 million Chinese yuan per year, driven by reduced disposal costs and coal purchases. The findings may support the viability of circular infrastructure in the face of a transitioning energy landscape, contingent on enhanced collaboration among thermal plants.
