Successful Transport of Transformer for Ørsted's Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm
On January 18, 2026, the first of eight major abnormal load movements was completed for Ørsted's Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm. A transformer, essential for converting power from the wind farm, was transported from King's Lynn port to a converter station in Swardeston, Norfolk.
The convoy traveled at a maximum speed of 12 mph, departing at 6:30 AM. The transformer, classified as an abnormal load due to its size and weight, was moved on a 28-axle trailer measuring 85 meters long, 5.4 meters wide, and 5.2 meters high, with a gross weight of 350 tonnes.
Two 250-tonne tractor units powered the movement. Create Consulting Engineers has been involved since 2018, providing technical services and managing the logistics, including Special Order Vehicle audits and traffic management plans. This successful operation marks a key milestone in the logistics for one of the world's largest offshore wind developments.
