Suffolk County Lithium-Ion Battery Storage Projects Under State Review
New York State is reviewing 11 proposed lithium-ion battery storage projects in Suffolk County as part of a larger initiative for 6,000 megawatts of battery storage by 2030. These projects are critical for enhancing grid stability and meeting green energy goals set by the state.

Eleven lithium-ion battery storage projects in Suffolk County are under review by New York State, with final awards expected by June. This review aligns with Governor Kathy Hochul's initiative to achieve 6,000 megawatts of battery storage statewide by 2030, which is essential for grid stabilization and renewable energy integration.
The New York Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) oversees the solicitation process, which evaluates project viability but does not guarantee construction. Suffolk's projects, concentrated in Brookhaven, face local moratoriums and community opposition, indicating potential delays.
The NYSERDA initiative includes 46 proposed plants statewide, while existing facilities operated by National Grid Ventures and NextEra are significantly smaller. Ongoing discussions about interconnection to the Long Island Power Authority grid are also taking place, with LIPA not holding approval rights over NYSERDA's projects.
