SUMMSEED Project Launches to Develop Sustainable Steel Solutions in Heavy Industry
The SUMMSEED initiative aims to create cost-efficient, sustainable steel solutions for heavy industry, backed by the RFCS. This project focuses on medium manganese steels utilizing wire-based 3D printing technologies.

The SUMMSEED project seeks to advance sustainable steel production for mining and heavy industry by developing medium manganese steels. Coordinated by the Technical University of Catalonia - BarcelonaTech, the initiative includes partners like Sandvik and Sidenor, focusing on alloy design and manufacturing processes.
Key technologies include directed energy deposition (DED) with laser-wire for additive manufacturing, which supports circular manufacturing and reduces waste. The project aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions by minimizing alloying elements and reusing end-of-life components. Industry guidelines and collaborative platforms will aid in transitioning to resource-efficient production models.
