SunZia Wind Project Begins Electricity Generation in California
The SunZia Wind project, the largest renewable energy initiative in the U.S., has started generating electricity. This development is critical for meeting California's growing energy demands, particularly as it aligns with climate goals by providing power during peak natural gas usage times.

SunZia Wind has commenced electricity generation, testing its 916 turbines ahead of commercial operations expected later this quarter. This 3.5-gigawatt project, which will deliver electricity via a 550-mile transmission line to California, is vital for supplying power to 3 million people in California and Arizona.
Despite facing permitting delays and opposition, SunZia's operation coincides with a record-breaking period for California's wind generation. Its impact comes at a time when clean energy resources are critical for supporting increasing demands linked to artificial intelligence and data centers. Ongoing litigation with Native American tribes over cultural site impacts could pose risks to the project’s future operations.
