Surat Municipal Corporation Launches Biogas Production Amid Global Fuel Supply Crisis
Surat Municipal Corporation has started producing compressed biogas (CBG) from waste to address fuel supply disruptions caused by the ongoing war. The plant has reached an output of two tonnes of CBG per day from 50 tonnes of waste, with plans to process 120 tonnes daily at full capacity. Developed in partnership with Biofics, the project aims to supply gas to commercial distribution companies and also produces organic fertilizer. The biogas can meet the daily fuel needs of around 130 CNG buses or serve 6,000-7,000 households.

In response to a global fuel supply crisis, Surat Municipal Corporation has commenced the production of compressed biogas (CBG) from municipal waste. Currently, the plant produces two tonnes of CBG daily from 50 tonnes of waste, with ambitions to process 120 tonnes daily and produce up to five tonnes of CBG.
The project, in partnership with Biofics, aims to supply gas to commercial gas distribution companies. The generated biogas could fuel approximately 130 CNG buses or meet the cooking energy needs of 6,000-7,000 households.
The waste is sourced from around 500 bulk generators and processed on-site, while also producing organic fertilizer. The infrastructure aligns with the Make in India initiative.
