Surge in Electricity Demand Resurrects 1968 Coal Power Plant in Chicago's Pilsen Neighborhood

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Electricity demand in the United States is rising rapidly, driven by data centers powering artificial intelligence systems that require constant energy supply. This surge has led to the reactivation of older fossil fuel sources, including a coal plant in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, originally established in 1968.

The plant's main coal unit was retired in 2012 but has been brought back into operation due to increased energy demands. The PJM Interconnection, which serves 13 states, is experiencing unprecedented load growth, with electricity consumption surpassing available production capacity.

Payments to energy producers for available capacity have risen over 800 percent year-on-year, prompting many fossil fuel plants to delay or cancel shutdowns. Operators warn that demand growth is outpacing the development of new energy sources and transmission infrastructure, necessitating the use of older backup units to stabilize the grid during peak demand.
