Suriname Government and Suralco Sign Funding Agreement for Community Development Projects
The Government of the Republic of Suriname and Suralco have signed a Funding Agreement to support community development projects in areas impacted by historical bauxite mining and the Afobaka Hydroelectric Power Plant. This public-private partnership will facilitate sustainable development through a jointly financed Development Fund, with each party contributing up to USD 240,000 annually.
The fund will enable up to twelve community projects per year, each receiving a maximum of USD 40,000. Eligible communities can propose initiatives focusing on small-scale production, social infrastructure, healthcare, skills development, and climate challenges. The agreement has an initial term of two years, extendable to a maximum of five years.
