Survivor Recalls 1991 RMAF Nuri Helicopter Crash in Johor
Chandrasegaran S M Mani recounts the 1991 crash of a Sikorsky S-61A-4 Nuri helicopter, where all 12 aboard survived. The incident highlights the importance of safety inspections and the risks associated with military aviation.

On January 16, 1991, a Sikorsky S-61A-4 Nuri helicopter crashed in a rubber plantation at Kampung Parit Zin, Muar, Johor, during a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) mission. All 12 individuals on board, including pilot Tien Sen An and co-pilot Saadan Basiron, survived despite the helicopter being severely damaged.
Investigations determined that metal fatigue caused the rotor blade failure. Following the incident, RMAF increased inspections of rotor blades every 60 flying hours. Chandrasegaran S M Mani, a member of the crew, later participated in a peacekeeping mission in Cambodia, where RMAF deployed eight Nuri helicopters. This crash serves as a reminder of the inherent risks of military aviation.
